Activities in the Rathmullan Area.
Situated midway on the western shore of Lough Swilly, Rathmullan is a good
base for exploring this beautiful area.
There are pleasant walks and drives in the area including Kinnegar and Rathmullan Woods.
There are a also number of beautiful and idyllic beaches within easy reach of the cottages
where you and your family can while away a sunny afternoon.

There is excellent fishing for wild brown trout and salmon in the area, and, for the more adventurous, deep sea fishing is available.
The arrival of the Summer ferry has also made the hidden treasures of Northern Donegal easily accesible from Rathmullan.
Golf
There are four high quality golf courses nearby and, in the summer months, the ferry from Rathmullan to Buncrana
allows easy access to Northern Donegal and Derry and the host of high class golf courses to be found there (including Ballyliffin and Royal Portrush.).

Fishing
The village also owns two first class sea fishing boats available for hire for fishing (with some excellent mackerel fishing in the lough this is a remarkable day out) or simply sightseeing on the lough.
Horse Riding
There is an Equestrian Centre nearby which caters for all levels - novice to expert.
And often as you amble along the beach you will encounter horses and ponies being exercised.

History and Culture
The Flight of the Earls Heritage Centre is located along the harbour.
The last two great Celtic chieftains, Hugh O'Donnell and Hugh O'Neill are commemorated here.
They departed Ireland from Rathmullan Harbour in 1607 after their defeat at Kinsale by the forces of Elizabeth I under Mountjoy in 1601.
This was a real turning point in Irish history, because the death of Celtic Ireland and its Brehon Laws rapidly followed their departure and soon
most of Ireland was under an English system of government.

History can even be found on your doorstep.
There are some ruins of a medieval castle in the village under which there is a fort (the Fort of the
Mullans from which the name of the village is derived).
The area around Rathmullan is steeped in history with visits by the Norsemen, the Anglo-Normans as well as the British.
All have left their mark and one of the most visible is the 19th century Fort Dunree. As well as that many Napoleonic forts are dotted around,
many of which are now private residences (see right).

Annual Festival
Rathmullan Festival runs over the first weekend in August and caters for the whole family.
There is a fancy dress competition, fun fair, live bands in the streets and local pubs as well as traditional Irish music and dancing.
The Festival ends with the Lough Swilly Yacht Club Regatta, and is not to be missed.
